In the United States, recreational marijuana has long been legalized but psilocybin mushrooms (fungi that contain psilocin) remain illegal. That may be changing in 2022, though, as Oregon voters prepare to vote on a ballot measure that would make magic mushrooms legal under licensed, therapeutic conditions starting in 2024. Similar votes in Colorado and California have led to a decline in police enforcement of laws against mushroom possession.

Magic mushrooms are not addictive, though they can produce a short-term tolerance that diminishes the drug’s effects over time. They are also not known to cause psychological dependency, and the drug’s active chemicals, psilocin and psilocybin, are thought to have anti-addictive properties.

A new generation of buyers is seeking out shrooms. Some are suffering from mental health conditions such as depression or PTSD, while others want to “micro-dose,” a practice that involves taking small doses of the drug to reduce symptoms of anxiety or depression. Cathy Jonas, owner of the first licensed center to experience magic mushrooms in Eugene, Oregon, says her customers are mostly older adults, but she sees younger people coming in too.

She says her facility requires each customer to have a preparation session with a trained facilitator, who stays with them as they experience the mushrooms. The facilitator can deny access to anyone who has active psychosis or thoughts of harming themselves, or who is taking certain medications that could raise serotonin levels, such as SSRI antidepressants like Citalopram (Celexa) or Sertraline (Zoloft).
